Stem Cells: The Quantity and Quality of Healing Power

According to a study by Dr. Arnold Kaplan, when we are born, about 1 out of every 10,000 cells in our body is a mesenchymal stem cell. It is the highest concentration of stem cells we will ever have naturally.

Think of your body as a piggy bank with a full supply of stem cells as a newborn. As we age, this piggy bank account of stem cells depletes as we use these cells up to repair and maintain our bodies. Every year we have fewer and fewer stem cells to help us repair and regenerate.

By age 30 only about 1 in 250,000 cells are mesenchymal stem cells and by age 80 it is only like 1 in approximately 2 million! For example, this means an 80 year old man has only 1/200th of the ability to regenerate and repair his body compared to a newborn.

This is one of the reasons it makes so much sense to procure stem cells from the umbilical cord tissue. Another reason why stem cells from umbilical cords have an advantage over stem cells procured from a patient’s own body by surgical means has to do with the rate or speed in which stem cells can become other cells.

As bodies age and slow down, so does the rate in which stem cells can become other cells and the differences are quite dramatic. By the time someone reaches retirement, around age 65 it can take twice as long, if not longer.

The exponential compounding effect of young, healthy stem cells from the umbilical cord of a newborn becoming new cells contrasted with the performance of stem cells from an older person’s own body, say retirement age, translates into a big difference in as little as a month’s time. We are talking about the development of hundreds of millions of cells compared to the development of only a few hundred cells.
